SAM

Sam has been with Cat Welfare since January 1999. When he came to us, he was very wild and just a young thing. You couldn't even touch him at all. He cringed in his cage for months! One of our staff members took extra time out to work with Sam, and slowly he became more trusting and we were able to make him a floor cat. Being out of the cage has made him more confident and he loves to be petted now. However, he hasn't made it to the point where he'll allow people to hold him. He thinks he's the "top cat" in the shelter and makes sure to let any new male floor cats know he's the boss. He's learned not to try that with the females though since they won't put up with that macho behavior.

Sam was adopted briefly in 2003 but was returned because all he did was hide. Once back in the shelter, he returned to his normal self and seemed happy to be back in what he's always considered to be his home--Cat Welfare.

Update Thursday, September 7, 2006 - Sam had to be euthanized this morning. Sam had always been in good health so the shelter staff and Sam's friends were shocked when all of a sudden he didn't seem himself a couple weeks ago. After being put in a cage for observation, he appeared to be getting better and everyone thought he must just have a "summer bug". He was reacting well to visitors and seemed to be on the mend when he took a turn for the worse yesterday. The shelter vet suspects due to things happening so quickly that he had some sort of organ failure. His favorite staff member, Cindy, was holding him and telling him how special he was in his last moments... so he had the love and comfort of one of his best friends as he took his last breath. We will all miss Sam. He was one of my personal favorites and I will miss seeing his happy face in the shelter. Things won't seem the same without him.

UPDATE: Sam was cremated and was buried in the garden of his best friend at the shelter, Cindy. She has planted some beautiful flowers on his grave.

Thanks to everyone who cared about Sam. We'll never forget you Sam.
