Lola

Lola

This is Lola, I got her in June for my graduation present. She has been the sweetest and most perfect kitten. She lives with one dog and one other cat around her and she adjusted well. She loves rubbing faces at night and scratching her face on my boyfriends beard. As seen in one of the pictures she seems to find my homework a comfortable pillow. Her best friend is her brother Floyd, who we adopted 2 days after her and he lives with my boyfriends sister. Although he is much bigger than his sister she always wins when they play. I was so happy to be able to save a brother and sister cat so that they always could be around each other. Lola was definitely the runt of her group because she is still so tiny compared to Floyd. It has been a great time having Lola around, I think she is one of the best animals I have had join my family. I'm hoping to adopt another kitten soon!

George

Tiki

George & Tiki

George and Tiki are both doing very well. They are well-behaved, and they love playing with string, fishing pole toys, and each other. Both adjusted very quickly to living in their new home.

Tiki is a sweet girl and loves cuddling. She also likes sitting behind me and putting her paw on my shoulder as I watch TV. It's easy to tell when Tiki is happy because she purrs so loudly. George is my big buddy. He is a very social cat and loves hanging out with people for hours on end. He also likes following me around the house and helping out on the computer. Here are a few of my favorite pictures. George is the gray, 5-year old male, and Tiki is the tortoisheshell, 13-year old female. Both are good companions, and I was also happy to adopt two older cats. Tiki has so much energy that it’s hard to believe she is 13!

Ramone

Ramone

We wanted to thank the staff and volunteers of Cat Welfare for taking such good care of Schroeder (formerly Ramone) until we could make him a forever part of our family. He's such a character and we've all fallen head over heels for him. He didn't seem to have the adjustment period we were expecting. With many friends and family members in and out over Christmas we worried that he'd be nervous and we had planned to let him find a safe hideout until everything calmed down, but he greeted every person without hesitation. One neighbor even brought him a cat treat, which he took immediately. We usually come home to find him in his favorite sunning spot on the ottoman in front of the great room window watching the critters out in the woods. But when we're home, he needs to be everywhere we are, investigating or just being loved. Thank you again... he's the perfect addition for our other kitty and family!

Simba

I wanted to inform you that our cat, Simba, whom we adopted from your shelter approximately 5 years ago, has just recently passed away.

We kept thinking to send you an update on how Simba was doing, but we regret that we never got around to doing that until now.

Simba always loved to be outside. When we first adopted him, we frequently took him outside on a harness. Eventually, we were able to walk him outside without a harness. We sometimes drew curious looks from others in our neighborhood for having a cat that mostly walked on the sidewalk. Even though he was well behaved, Simba would often run off into the bushes to explore for a while.

At night, Simba would curl up in bed at our feet and relax with us, and eventually he started sleeping on top of us.

Even though Simba was an older cat, he still enjoyed a good chase. We would sometimes chase him around the house, and sometimes he would chase us! His favorite time to strike was as we were walking up the stairs.

Like any cat, Simba loved cardboard boxes. We kept several boxes of various shapes and sizes around the house for Simba to hide in and scratch holes into.

I don't think that we will ever find another cat quite like Simba, and we couldn't have asked for anything more. Simba brightened our day, greeting us at the door whenever we came home and curling up with us. We feel privileged to have given him a comfortable home and to have made him happy during the time that we had with him.

Finn & Chief White Cloud

Hello! Finn and Chief White Cloud here. Just wanted to give you a little update on our new lives in our forever home. I, Finn, on the left, was adopted in April 2010. I was a little nervous at first, but my new 'parents' made me feel welcome and now I run the place. Chief White Cloud, on the right, was adopted in March 2011. He had a harder time adjusting to our new home, but again, our new 'parents' have worked with him to make him feel welcome. It worked and he is now a big part of our family! CWC and I are best buds and you can usually find us hanging out together, playing or sleeping. We love to do both. We are very happy to have found our forever home!

Wilfred Paige

Wilfred Paige

It's me Wilfred Paige! You may remember me as "Paige".

For weeks my new family visited the shelter trying to find a perfect match for them. I sat staring at the back of my cage and was described by the staff as "very depressed". My potential family said I was like the Charlie Brown Christmas Tree…"all it needs is a little love".

Once I found that I would be sleeping with a little girl in her purple bedroom, that she would dress me in flowers every day, and let me sleep on her electric blanket...not only did I quickly forgive her for naming me Wilfred Paige, but I knew I had hit the "cat lottery" with this family! I have fallen in love with the teenage boy that lives here. I let him and his friends nickname me "Wiffie". They let me hang out while they play X-Box and I eat their pizza when they are not looking.

This family has a dog that I find annoying and gross. I often have to put him in his place, but because my family loves him, I will tolerate him. Things are pretty great here. My family tells me every day how beautiful I am and how lucky they are to have me. I couldn't agree more. I do hope that Storm found a home. I know he was their first choice for weeks, until I kissed the little girl the day she visited. We bonded immediately!

Thank you Cat Welfare for finding me this family.

Sincerely, Wilfred Paige

Holly

Holly

Hello there, my name is Holly (formerly Amanda at CWA). Thanks for taking care of me while I waited my turn to find a forever home. I was very sad because someone brought me back, but now I have two great owners. They fell victim to my patented head-rub and purrs. I knew they would bring me home even though it was their first cat. My human roommates even adopted another cat for me to play with. We get along great! Also, the humans were very grateful for Cat Welfare because I came spayed, microchipped, and vaccinated!

Again, thank you very much for taking care of me. Meow!

Buddy

I wanted to let you know that Buddy is settling in fine. He enjoys having his own house again. He is well behaved, uses his litter box faithfully, and is very affectionate. He particularly enjoys hanging out with me on the couch and I've pulled up a chair for him next to the computer which he uses frequently.

Altogether I couldn't ask for a better cat. While he's picked up the nickname "Buddy the Shaitan" because he startles me by jumping on me in bed, he's a sweet guy. He looks rather regal loafing on the couch. I cannot imagine why anyone dumped this cat off, but it was their loss and my gain.

Pretty early on in the search I decided that I would be getting my cat from Cat Welfare. The three cats I was most interested in were Baxter, Moby, and Bud. I kept going over their little onsite bios, and for whatever reason Bud was the one that got me hooked. This was about a month before my new place was ready to move into because I had to have extensive repairs and renovations done.

I checked the website several times a day during that month, hoping each time that Bud was still on there and that he hadn't been adopted to someone else. I put together what I laughingly referred to as "Buddy's Hope Chest"-- an old mop closet with sacks of cat litter, a cat carrier, a litter box, cans of cat food, bowls, cat toys, etc.

The very day I moved I went to the shelter to meet Bud. I set out, and after getting lost three times, arrived at the shelter anxious to find out if Bud was still there. I walked in looking for a black cat with a spot of white on his chest and immediately saw dozens of black cats with spots of white on their chests.

The staff probably thought that I was a little nuts, because I came for Bud and that was the only cat I wanted to see. They were gracious enough to spend the next 10 minutes sorting through scores of identical-looking black cats to find him. But he was eventually located and I sat on a chair and started petting him and letting him smell (then knead) my hands and after a couple of minutes I knew that yeah, this is the one.

Buddy is the calmest, most laid back guy. He settled right in and seems to love having his own home again. His past is lost, but I often wonder why he was out on the street. He was someone's pet at one time--nobody declaws a stray cat. Did he escape, was he dumped, did someone move and abandon him? I can't know but I'll always wonder what happened to him. Maybe he jumped on them one too many times when they were asleep, which is a joke, but that is the only fault I can find with the guy. Having a large animal leap onto your chest when you're sleeping and waking up to a black shape with yellow-green eyes inches from your face.....that is how he came to be called Buddy the Shaitan. Seriously, though, he's a great guy. I'm very glad to have him.

Donny & Will

We adopted Will in November 2010 and we have had so much fun with him. We have 3 dogs and another cat. I believe he thinks he is part dog. He runs to the door when they do, he follows them when it is dinnertime, and he loves most to wrestle with our biggest dog, Donny.

I have attached a picture of Will and Donny hanging out together.

Wilbur & Orville

I just wanted to write & let you know how well the "Wright Brothers" are doing. We adopted Wilbur & Orville on 7/28/11. They had been rescued from a house fire & had to be bottle fed. So, first, I would like to thank the volunteers who did such a wonderful job!!! These 2 boys are the most cuddly kittens I have ever had. They still love lying on their backs in your arms & having their bellies rubbed!!

Wilbur is quite the ornery one. He tears through the house jumping on anything & everything! Especially my back! LOL. But as soon as you pick him up he just purrs! He also is the one who keeps trying to escape the house. He wants out sooo bad, he can taste it! We have found that none of us are quicker than he is! LOL.

Orville is the sweet, quiet one. He has taken one of my daughter's blankets for his own. He drags that through the house, wherever he needs to cuddle. Occasionally, we find that he has also stolen socks from the laundry.

Thank you, for all that you do!!!!

Mr. Bugz

I arrived at Cat Welfare a year ago when someone found me with a wound on my leg, and they eventually had to amputate my front right leg. They named me Bugz, or Bugzy, which I respond to well, so my owners also call me "Mr. Bugz" or "LoveBugz." Having experienced the amputation and some other past trauma, I was scared very easily and designated a special needs cat. I had to live in a quiet, more isolated part of the shelter. When my new owners saw my photo and story in the last newsletter, they had just lost their 15 year old "special needs" cat and were looking for another cat to adopt. They visited me and then picked me up on August 10th. My new home is a quiet condo with an open lower and upper level, but because I am scared easily, I lived strictly in the lower level for the first 4 days. Even though my owners were careful, the noises of the kitchen were just too overwhelming! But soon I realized that they had placed an additional food dish for me in the kitchen, and my interest in food upstairs overcame my fright of the dishwasher! I became very affectionate quickly with my female owner who has a softer voice, and I soon started begging her for attention on my own. Rather quickly, my curiosity overcame me and I just had to go up the stairs to the upper level, first just at night so I could explore when it was quiet. I soon figured out that my owners spent most of their time in the upper level, and I got so comfortable in such a short time up there that if I get startled, I rarely run back down the stairs anymore. I have a few designated favorite upstairs hiding places---behind the couch or under their bed. I especially love to hide under their bed during thunderstorms! I soon discovered one of my favorite places---on a fleece blanket on top of my owners' bed (as you can see in the photo). From this point, I can rest comfortably, look out a window, and be close to my owner who works on her computer nearby. Even with a missing leg, I am still an active, indoor 6 year-old who likes to jump, run down the hallway, and am just now starting to discover the birds and trees outside the windows. My owners are also bird lovers and so far I've been most intrigued with hummingbirds. I also use my litter box faithfully and have a hearty appetite! While I am very comfortable with my female owner and quieter visitors, I still cower and hide if my male owner tries to force his love and attention on me. He has to wait for me to show interest and drop my fear levels, and I still have to hide sometimes when he walks into the room. However, he is very patient and understanding with me, and we are making bits of progress each day. Overall, I am feeling less depressed and fearful each day and seem to invite each day with new vigor. I know that both of my owners fell in love with me and I indeed have a "forever" home. Most of all, I thank my friends at Cat Welfare for saving my life so I could be united with my new family!

Logan (formerly Timmy)

There is no two ways about it, Logan is a brat. When he demands an audience to watch him eat, he nips. When he wants attention, he nips. He always looks for an opening to squeeze in between us on the couch. He announces his presence into the room with a loud, wet sneeze. He knows how to make a dramatic entrance. He abruptly pushes open the bedroom door and fills the air with his happy purring.

Logan (formerly Timmy) was a Special Adoption candidate on the Cat Welfare site in December 2002. The day after I found him online, he came home as my Christmas present. He has a mysterious sinus issue that causes him to sneeze, A LOT! This allergy/issue has baffled numerous vets. But he doesn’t allow his “disorder” to get in his way. He is a people cat. He is our constant loyal companion, always under foot when we are cooking dinner, or gently nuzzling our leg when we walk in the door. He is a mobile, attention-starved speed bump, but that’s okay. With such a large personality, it is easy to see why everyone that meets him loves him. My husband was not really a cat person before meeting Logan. However, Logan wormed his way into his heart.

Thank you CWA for taking care of our sneezy, lovable Christmas kitty. Logan is one of a kind and we love him, attitude and all.

PS. The picture shows him sitting in a wok. :)

Willard Scott

I met Willard Scott about a year ago at CWA. I knew he was a special kitty from the start because he let me scratch his belly right away. He was so good natured and very calm around all the other cats. Once I decided to adopt a cat I knew it was going to be Willard Scott. When I got him home he climbed out of his box and looked around as if to say, “This will do.” He never hid and he never seemed frightened. He has made himself at home ever since.

Carisa

Carisa

Hi, my name is Carisa Kaeri Ann and I was adopted in August 2010. When I first came into Cat Welfare I had a bum leg which was later amputated. When my new mom first saw me, it was after my surgery and she was awed by my beauty (long haired calico) and saddened to learn of my leg amputation.

So for the next few weeks she came to visit the other cats, and always made it a point to visit me. She was told that I needed exercise and being that I am an older (10 years) cat, they didn't want me to be a floor cat with my new disability and age. So she fostered me for two weeks and the rest is history. I think they call that Foster Care Failure!!! YEAH!!!

It has been fun. She also has an older cat, Spice, who came from Cat Welfare 18 years ago. Spice lived with another cat, Sully who died of kidney failure in February 2010. My new mom was worried about getting another cat because of Spice's age and disposition after losing Sully, but we get along fine. There is also the dog, Baylee, who I really adore and love to give kisses.

I am very much a lap cat and love to give kisses to anybody that pets me. I also love to go outside with my harness on of course. I just love to sit on the patio under the table and watch the birds and squirrels at their feeders. And as far as the missing leg, I get along just fine without it.

My thanks to Cat Welfare for such good care until I could find a new forever and happy home. Purrrr!!!

Stefan

Stefan

Hi, friends. My name is Stefan. I’m gray-and-white and 8 years old. I started life in a colony of cats living free and being cared for by Anne Riley. She noticed me and brought me to Cat Welfare. I was adopted out before but got an eye disease, and became blind.

I did well at Cat Welfare. I hung out on a cat tree near the door so people would talk to me as they came in. I also made the rounds of the adoption room every day to make sure everything was under control. I was sort of a favorite there, but I was hoping for a forever home.

Then last summer, it happened! I met my Mom. She volunteers at Cat Welfare, giving attention to all the kitties. She met me, and was taken with me. She is blind too, and knows a lot about how to do things when you’re blind. When she learned that I was blind, she spent extra time with me each week. We got to know and love each other. I’d sit in her lap and knead her chest to show her I’d like her to be my special person. After a few weeks, she decided to take me home. What joy!

Now I get to lie on the couch, a chair or the bed, or on a shelf in the kitchen. I sometimes help Mom work on the computer. Did you know her computer talks to her? I love listening to it. It reads aloud all those strange words that show up on the screen. I visit with all her friends when they come to our house, too.

Hey, I have a good thing going here. I’m the only male in this household. There are 5 other cats, two dogs, and Mom, and they are all females. I guess that means I can rule the roost. Or is it Mom who gets to do that? Oh well. I thank Cat Welfare for all their wonderful care of me. And I’m very thankful to have my special forever home.

Blaze

Frankie

My daughter, Kira, and I first met Blaze at Cat Welfare in the early fall of 2005. There was nothing to see but a lump under a blanket in her cage. However there was plenty to hear – a myriad of angry cat noises! I told Kira, “leave that one alone, she doesn’t want to be bothered”. Next thing I knew Kira was holding Blaze in her arms. We came to visit the Cat Welfare cats many more times. It was always the same with Blaze hiding under her blanket, growling but there were still a lot of adorable kittens as well as an assortment of personable friendly cats of every size, shape and color. We told Kira she could select any kitten or cat to join our family thinking she would choose one of the playful kittens. Kira chose Blaze. On October 20, 2005 Blaze came home. Blaze hid in our basement for a few days. She never missed a meal though! She doesn’t hide anymore and has become quite the princess diva! We’re all glad Kira and Blaze chose each other.

In the summer of 2008 we met a tiny blue-eyed ball of white fluff at Cat Welfare. Frankie was off to a rough start in life. Both of his rear legs were broken. Thank goodness he ended up at Cat Welfare where he received the care he needed and proceeded to heal. He was restricted to cage rest while his legs mended. Not an easy thing for a kitten to do. We visited Frankie frequently and on September 10, 2008 Frankie came home. He likes to lie on the kitchen counter and watch the things he displaces fall to the floor with a crash that doesn’t bother him in the least since he is deaf. The other cats in our family hiss at him and “warn” him to back off but of course he doesn’t since he is supreme (besides he doesn’t hear them). He keeps everyone in place and on their toes. We are very lucky to have Frankie in our family.

Dan & Mikey

Dan with Jess

Hi! I have been meaning to write this note for a very long time! Hoping that maybe some of you remember these cats and get a kick out of this email.

I adopted Ricky and Bobby (two brothers, part of a family of 5 kittens and 2 parents) in September of 2009, When I met them, they were the last two of the bunch. Actually, I met Ricky first - he jumped into my lap while I was petting a different cat! When I heard he had a twin brother, one of the ladies working found Bobby. I asked if they could be adopted separately, and when I was told "yes" I adopted them both - I couldn't bear to separate them!

We have since moved to New Jersey, but the boys are so happy! Renamed Dan Mondo (formerly Ricky) and Mikey Frenchfries (formerly Bobby), they have such distinct personalities, very different from each other, yet remain the best of friends. They spoon and groom each other and play and roughhouse. Dan Mondo has grown into his name and put on a couple of pounds, while Mikey remains slender like a frenchfry. Dan is very independent and will grace you with his presence on your lap or on the counter while you are cooking when he deems fit. Mikey is very sweet and needy...he is my shadow, following me everywhere, constantly chirping and trilling at my heels; my little snuggle-monster, sleeping in the crook of my arm every night.

They both race to the bathroom when they hear the shower turn on, and sit on the lid of the toilet or the edge of the bath while I shower so they can jump in when I'm done to lick the water dripping off the loofah! They are both very chatty, and growl at each other when I feed them chicken. They are very protective of that special meal! Actually, they love all food... and wake me up by gently tapping my face with the tips of their paws to get breakfast. We recently moved to a new apartment that has massive window sills, and they enjoy clacking at the pigeons and squirrels. They both hate being brushed, but I have trained them with Catwell jerky treats during all brushings, so now they at least have a Pavlovian purring response (while they bite me) when I brush them. :)

These two boys are such a riot. I love them so much, and wanted to thank you for doing the great work you do. Tonight, I saw a kill-list for a shelter in New York City (where they post the photos of the cats they are going to kill the next day, and you only have a few hours to save them by making an adoption reservation) --- it made me so sad, but especially thankful that my two little guys are alive and very well.

Anyway, if you could ask around if anyone remembers these guys and share this email, I would appreciate it very much! Thanks a million.

Jess Kelly

Thor

Thor is doing great! He meows a lot and acts like an old man. He sleeps on my bed every night and follows me around the house. Recently, he has been venturing outside and loves to watch the birds that come and feed on the feeder I have attached to the window.
Thor is the best cat ever, but he sheds like crazy!

Max & Percy

My name is Percy (formerly Bill). I am the one on the left in the picture. I am sitting with my big brother Max. I came to live with Max and Mom Lynn in January 2011. Sadly, Max had lost his older sister Penny in December. Mom thought Max needed a new companion. Max wasn't sure so he hissed at me when he first saw me. But, after several days of "acclimation" Max learned I'm a great guy. Now we get along well and I know Max is glad I'm here.

Mom says I am a lot like Max was at age 2. I run all over the house and find the highest place to perch. I really surprised Mom the day I flew off the upstairs banister onto the kitchen counter. No place is too high for me!

I'm very happy to be with Mom and Max. Thanks to everyone at Cat Welfare for taking good care of me until I came to my forever home.
